14th International Seminar-Meeting on the rebetiko July, 16-23 2023 Skyros Island, Greece

The 14th international seminar-meeting took place from 16 to 23 July 2023 in Skyros. It coincides with the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the relevant UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and with the celebration of the “European Days of Cultural Heritage”. The international seminar-meeting on rebetiko in Skyros is a point of reference in the official text of UNESCO for rebetiko.

Our events were held, as always, with respect to the heritage of rebetiko and the positive aura of the beautiful island of Skyros.Our constant partners are the local community, the PEAP of the Municipality of Skyros, the Museum of Manos and Anastasia Faltaits, the Cultural Association of Skyros “Anemoessa” (formerly SOPPA) and the SNE (Skyros Nautical Company).

Open meeting on Sunday 16 July 2023 at 9 pm in the atrium of Faltaits Museum with the participants and friends of the seminar. At the meeting we met and exchanged opinions and had a drink with a simple traditional treat, offered by the Municipality of Skyros.

Tuesday, 18th of July 20:30 pm «Markos Vamvakaris, the soul of the rebetiko. Rebetiko as a living heritage of humanity» by George Makris.

Thursday, 20st  of July 20:30 pm  «Harmonica and accordion at rebetiko music. The case study of  Vamvakari’s discography» by Katerina-Mirto Fatourou.

  «The folk dances of the rebetiko song» by George Georgoudis, President of the  Cultural Association of Skyros “Anemoessa”

Central event in the Square of Chora, Skyros on Friday 21/7 9:00 pm with rebetika songs and dances by the participants of the seminar and the Cultural Association of Skyros “Anemoessa”.

Open music nights in the picturesque taverns of the island, together with the participants and their friends from Monday 17/7 to Thursday 20/7 10 pm.

Proceedings of the rebetiko seminar-meetings in Skyros are posted on the website of the seminar. Among others you can find a historical and sociological approach of the development of rebetiko song, the names of the musical scales (dromoi) in rebetika, historical references to the life and work of great composers, singers and skilled players of rebetiko (Thanasis Manetas, Costas Bezos (A.
